2011 in Review

Years seem to be going faster and faster for me, and my time here at EDGE has been no exception. The last year has seen lots of developments and some great achievements for the EDGE programme. If you have not followed us for long, or your memory does not work as well as it used to, here is a look at some of what happened back in 2011 on EDGE….

January

• EDGE Coral Reefs launched

February

• EDGE Fellow Claudio Soto-Azat located several new populations of southern Darwin’s frogs, extending the known range of this species

March

• New EDGE Fellow for the Chinese giant salamander: Zhou Feng

April

• Sighting of a solenodon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, confirmed presence of the species in the region

May

• EDGE Coral Reefs took part in Project Ocean

June

• Campaign launched to help reforestation efforts for the Horton Plains slender loris in Sri Lanka
• Helen Meredith did an assessment visit to expand the scope of the Sagalla caecilian project in Kenya

July

• 1^st EDGE Coral Reefs Field Course took place in Indonesia

August

• New paper published shows a more robust measure for EDGE mammals

September

• Craig Turner helps launch the reforestation project in Sri Lanka after the success of the campaign
• “Tuppence a Toad: Tales from UK Toad Conservation and beyond” was a successful fundraising event with Froglife

October

• Wild Bactrian camels have been radio-collared in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia

November

• The First Regional Conservation Tools Training Course took place in Nepal
• Instant Wild: revolutionary camera trap technology launched

• The first ever video footage of a wild pygmy hippo in Liberia
